I'm helping a friend find a tabl baladi. Where do you buy them? Do there happen to be any vendors near DC? Or can they be mail ordered?
Thanks

Sat, October 24, 2009 - 11:33 AMAbdul Hamid in Milwaukee, I am sure someone here can supply the details, however, they are usually huge. I think the shells come from Pakistan but he does the heading, ropes, etc. Excellent work but they have animal skins on both sides. Other than people who either make their own or have gotten lucky, the best are from Turkey and that's where David has been living and got the one he has for sale. I haven't played it but have faith in David's ability to choose one.

Sun, October 25, 2009 - 4:22 PMDepends on if you want a traditional animal skin tabal or a modern one with a plastic skin. Most professional tabal players in Sydney make their own drums from standard parts from a western drum shop.
A traditional drum, which can be a pain to tune in wet or humid conditions, you will need to find an importer. We are lucky in Sydney we have at least one importer who can get exotic instruments from the middle east, even if he does charge a very high premium.

My tabal that I got from them was made in Syria.

You might want to contact existing doumbek importers and see if they will do a special order. -

Mon, October 26, 2009 - 1:06 AMIn this case, Ignatius, I would definitely buy David's vs going to an importer I didn't know. Plus, as I said, in general from what I've seen available here, a decent Turkish one is way better than the Arabic and Balkan ones I've seen. While I am sure you could get an excellent one, say from Bulgaria, you're going to have to be connected. -

Mon, October 26, 2009 - 6:25 AMIf you want to go that route, I am capable of making key-tuned w/ plastic head davul/tabl... it's not inexpensive, tho. -

Mon, October 26, 2009 - 9:30 AMWhat kind of price range do you have? I recently saw a friend of mine get taken advantage of, paying $350 for a 16 inch diameter that sounded like two basketballs run over by a truck. -

Re: where does one buy a decent tabl baladi?
Wed, October 28, 2009 - 6:20 AMI charge cost of parts + $100 for staining, clearcoating and putting it all together. Peanuts, really.
Since I am getting new hardware from various sources, Keller maple shells with the bearing edges cut for me and holes drilled, the heads... well, two 20" REMO renaissance heads cost $100 and the 20x16 shell was roughly $250 so there's $350 right there... Wish I hadn't sold the 20" off last year. Oh well.
