Here's some recent stuff from my hafla with Souhail on May 2nd. Some cool solo stuff by Gorkem Somer and Majdi Kurd. I'm a harsh self-critic so I'll reserve judgement on my own bit. Suffice it to say I had an excruciatingly long time to think of something before my turn came up and still came up dry.

And here's a chiftitilli piece where I'm playing lead drum and Souhail is playing riqq (both cabaret and classical style). Hard to tell because someone's sparkly butt is in the way most of the time. If you listen closely, it almost sounds like Rachid knows how to play the violin. Heh.*

Sat, May 30, 2009 - 11:16 PMDidn't sound dry to me at all. You took some artistic pauses for effect, make them appreciate that much more when you do play. Really, with so much talent on that stage you held your own just fine, no apologies necessary!!!

This one was done a couple months ago with a dancer who wishes to remain unnamed because she was out of uniform. Some of the material is pirated from a couple people I know (ahem) but more than half is mine. ;-)

Sat, October 17, 2009 - 7:22 PMOh, I forgot to ask, does anyone have any ideas on what to do when your backup isn't catching a signal to change tempo or drop out? The part where I botched this one was when I was trying to communicate a change and it didn't happen fast enough. Just curious what other people do to handle this. (Punch them in the throat?)
Seriously, I'm grateful to anyone who's willing to show up and play backup, especially for a bit part like this. And it always surprises me when they keep coming back despite the throat-punching and general abuse. =)
