          my point exactly~

however, there is a recording of Zakir from the mid-70's Shakti ensemble called "what need have I for this, what need have I for that? I am dancing at the Feet of my Lord.... All is Bliss... All is Bliss" I don't think I have ever heard anything quite like it.... SMOKIN'~! Zakir and McLaughlin had this Coltrane/Elvin Jones type of relationship....

          Anyhoo~ yeah~ apples and oranges~

Technique is a beautiful thing~ but competition gets..... boring.

yes but does it make music?

                Competition is what makes masters...

this may be true in its most productive sense~

but if you are only inspired to become a master so you can blow everyone else away
then I would suggest that your technical prowess is only feeding your ego (nafs) and in
truth there isn't much value, or Music, in that.

having the biggest dick or perfect six-pack abs doesnt make one a man~ nor does having
the fastest hands make one a musician.

that said, these clips that you are posting are thrilling and i have definetly enjoyed checking them out.

                  Salaam~

Maybe to some, but to me, for if that's what it takes then it isn't music. Zakir is a master percussionist, not because he competes, but because he plays from his soul. Natiq is a masterful percussionist, who also play from his soul and he, too does not compete. They don't have to. They just play music masterfully.

                  Just my opinion...

I'm with you, Daveed. Don't get me wrong. I'll tee it up with anybody on the soccer pitch or judo mat. But, music expresses my emotions in a sharing way, if you'll forgive the hippie gibberish, that competition doesn't do.

I met Natiq in Samarqand in 2001, during Sharq Taronalari. He is the most amazing percussionist I have ever seen. His humility is only exceeded by his skill. Thanks for the heads up about this incredible YouTube video...Daveed

I think he said that competition is the by-product of productive work, and not the end goal

I love competition...friendly and non; it sharpens my chops and builds my strength, both physical and mental. Musicality can be broadened by chops when used carefully, and competition challenges you to be driven beyond what your desires alone can do.

And I love a good battle; I can both bust a nose and be busted in the nose and keep a grin. It makes life exciting, and drumming, too!!! ;:^)>
