I bought one of these powerball gyroscopes yesterday because I decided to put my money where my mouth is and increase my forearm strength to see if it will improve my drumming.

It wasn't until I read the blurb on the box that it is recommended for drummers and other musicians which made me very happy. So far the reviews I've read are from guitarists. Has any drummers here used this?
My left forearm is slightly hurting today. It's quite addictive using the ball and I think I overdid it. Also have to remember to have my can of tuna before bed to provide the protein the body needs to repair and strengthen the muscle.
I've also figured out that to isolation the muscles for the Ka hand you have to hold the ball only with your pinky, ring finger and thumb. Otherwise you ted to only really grip the ball with your middle, index finger and thumb.

Re: Forearm resistance training with powerball gyroscope
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 10:28 PMYeah, Dynaflex has been making these for years - www.dynaflexpro.com - I've had a couple over the last 10 years or so. I always tell myself I'll keep using it, but then I forget, or lose it, or something. They do make your forearms burn like heck if you use them a lot, though.

Sun, April 27, 2008 - 11:29 PMCool. Thanks.
The GRIPMASTER works well and its only $14.00 (usually used by guitarists -- sold at Guitar Center & Musician's Friend). You can exercise all 4 fingers + thumb individually as well. I use mine about 2x a week for about 15 minutes a shot and I noticed a big difference after using it 3 weeks.

Re: Forearm resistance training with powerball gyroscope
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 6:36 AMWow! Fancy stuff. The cheap old-fashioned way to build your forearms is a weight on a rope attached to a wooden dowel.
Hold your arms straight out, fingers down, and turn the dowel away from your body, winding the rope and lifting the weight. Then do it again turning the dowel towards yourself this time to work different muscles. Then flip your hands over, holding the dowel with your fingers up, and repeat each direction.
You can use only a pound or two at first. Once you build up to a 5-pound weight, you will have forearms that look like a thick oak branch.
Watch out for putting your fingers through those heads, though!
