NOT the internal tuning clown colored one! Hehe.
I spoke to someone that has external tuning soloist and he says the dums are lower and tek's crisper compared to his friends regular internal tuning (clown) soloist.
I know people here have been saying the tek's just arent as good as an aluminum drum but I also havent seen anyone make that comparison playing the external tuning version either. So please let me know if you have layed a finger on one of these drums.
Thanks
Scott

Re: Anyone have or try the Remo Soloist EXTERNAL tuning doumbek?
Thu, November 5, 2009 - 12:43 PMThe ones that Issam brought to Dallas (the red ones) sounded and felt really good to me, which was really surprising. I thought for it being plastic and paper material it would be light, but this sucker was heavy. -

Re: Anyone have or try the Remo Soloist EXTERNAL tuning doumbek?
Fri, November 6, 2009 - 12:44 PMI have played a couple of these at various Remo events, and I think they sound fine.
My issue with them is the "T" shape that the rim gives the side of the drum. Where I am used to letting my left arm rest on a normal doumbek, these make that uncomfortable, putting my wrist in an awkward position. The alternative was to keep my arm in the air, "hovering" above the drum, but that lead to it being wobbly, and to my arm getting tired.
Ergonomically, not good for me.
The sound though seemed fine. A bit on the plastic side, but I am a fan of a very sharp, bell like Tek and Ka. -

Re: Anyone have or try the Remo Soloist EXTERNAL tuning doumbek?
Sat, November 14, 2009 - 8:49 AMi would suggest trying one before writing it "off". i was sceptical of the shape of the external hoop, but found it actually very comfortable. my experience with them is that if i am the only tabla in the tahkt (small ensemble), then i like to play my remo because of the warmth and resonnance of the dumm, and the takk is fine on its own. (the smallest of the 3 sizes has the sharpest takk).
but if i'm playing in a larger ensemble, esp w/ other tablas involved, then i will play my Egy Gawhara, which cuts through everything like a surgical steel knife. the down side of the aluminum drum is the dumm is weak (which isnt a problem when playing with an ensemble or other drummers)
some people, like faisal, are finding a happy medium by installing a remo skyn deep head on an aluminum tabla, and getting a warmer dumm withouot compromising a crisp takk
