So the previously mentioned new Egy Ghawara (a.k.a. GEF) Riqs are on on Raquy's web page. Has anyone tried one? The price is very close to the new Cooperman Riq so I wonder how they compare.

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Thu, May 21, 2009 - 7:14 AMHey, thanks for mentioning this! I had no clue they made a "quality riq."
I would like to know what people think about that GEF riq (is it a GEF?).
What is weird about the Cooperman riq is I bought their first model that they came out with and it was less than $125. I see they have really gone up in price. The old one was nice, so I am hoping the new one is twice as good! ;)

Here is a link to a comparison to a number of different riqq's I think the GEF is mentioned
I beleive there is also a video of David K playing all the different ones -

Thu, May 21, 2009 - 2:18 PMEgy Ghawara is the one who makes these riqs. Does he work for GEF or am I confused?

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 10:12 AMOk the rumor that I heard is that GEF (a.k.a Ghawaret El Fan) is now called "Egy Ghawara". I can't find GEF's website anymore so that may be true but who knows...
Anyway the Riq in David's post is the metal Riq they have made for along time. The new one is wooden, has hammered jingels and costs 225.00 + shipping. The old metal ones could be had for a song (and made good defense weapons in a pinch)
So the question remains if anyone has actually played one? -

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 10:37 AMYes I have one
I bought it from Egyptcart two years ago
Heavy had a powerbeat head I swapped it for a clear head
I like it has a powerful sound but not as powerful as a cowbell ha ha

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Fri, May 22, 2009 - 10:57 AMIf you ever consider parting with your Remo riq, Alan, ask me first. I might be able to find it a good home. I'm trusting the timing of which will be after I recover from paying for Issam's and Tobias' workshops at Ya Halla. :-)

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 12:44 AMHuh. A $200+ riq from Egypt that's actually worth that much money? Call me skeptical. -

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 9:38 AMWhile I share isfahani's skepticism, I think Faisal has a very similar riqq. It's a little on the heavy side for me but sounds okay. However, the two things to keep in mind: if I recall correctly, it was having some "physical" problems (as in falling apart) and while it sounded great when Faisal played i,t so would a basketball run over by a truck. You would want to make sure the width is correct as the Cooperman riqq is too wide for really serious riqq players and to see if you can swap out the zils without wrecking the edge. Maybe Faisal can chime in on this thread. -

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Mon, May 25, 2009 - 12:50 PMIt appears to be an almost identical item as this one here:
www.nileshop.net/store/nil...ewItem.asp
but without the mother of pearl inlay. I own the one pictured among several others and it is a very nice functional riqq, but I wouldn't pay over $200 for it. -

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Mon, June 1, 2009 - 2:47 PMI bought one like that for a lot cheaper that had the same tuning system. The tuning hardware slipped on the rim. After 2 years the bolts broke out the wood shell from the tension on the hardware. It had a powerbeat head. It is a nice paperweight. Cannot really be played at this point.
Hope these are an actual instrument for $200 or I would feel ripped off a second time.

Re: New GEF Riq - Anyone played one?
Tue, June 2, 2009 - 2:20 PMI think that riq in Jeffrey's Nileshop link is the same one as on eBay and Amazon for about $80-90. There's also a wood body version (no inlay) that's otherwise exactly the same on eBay and Amazon for $20-30. I'm planning on getting the wood version in my next round of unnecessary shopping. I'm not too surprised to see the note about those types collapsing under their own tension after a while, I'll be sure and keep an eye on that if I get one. Maybe store it loose when not playing for long periods just to be sure? The zills in it don't look like they're nearly the quality of the $200 ones shown above though obviously. Still better than the blue plastic body, pop-rock, tambourine I currently play! -

Tue, June 2, 2009 - 7:38 PMSince Raquy sells it on her web site, I wonder if she has a video of her playing it? Anyone asked her?
