Last fall when we visited Denver, we saw a performance by Rashid's ensemble at a church next to a small college in West Denver. The talented lady drummer was playing a hand drum she called a "Katan" (spelling guessed at). The katan appeared to be about the same diameter and depth of a snare drum that had a batter head and no resonator head. It was played on a snare drum stand with her hands. She said that Souhail Kaspar taught her how to play the Katan. I have not been able to find this drum for sale nor have I found any kind of instructional DVD or youtube performance. Do any of you know anything about this drum? Billy_G

Sun, July 5, 2009 - 1:31 AMhi billy twyla,
others can say better than me about arabic music. in Turkey, one name for it is 'Kanar Bendir', it is played on a stand as you saw or between the legs. here is an example of a rather, um, energetic performance on one: www.besiktasmuzik.com/brans.php they are used generally as a back up low end instrument or can used alone for quieter pieces just as a normal frame drum would be. -
